Pet Microchipping with Your Marana Veterinarian
Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of a pet going missing knows how scary it can be to not know where your animal companion is and whether your family and pet will ever be reunited again. At Dove Mountain Veterinary, your Marana veterinarian, we’ve seen how frantic pet owners can get and the time and effort they put into locating a missing animal.
They pour their hearts into printing up fliers to post in their neighborhood and mount social media campaigns to see if anyone online can help them. To improve the chances of a successful reunion, we always advise pet owners to get their pets microchipped.
Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet
If you’ve never brought your pet in for cat microchipping services or if this will be the first time you’ve come in for dog microchipping, you may not be aware of the benefits of a pet microchip.
The microchip fits inside a strong glass cylinder about the size of a grain of rice. No anesthesia is required during the procedure, which involves the vet using a needle to insert the microchip just under the skin. The microchip’s unique ID number will go into a lost pets database.
Now, you won’t have to worry about your pet’s ID tag falling off of its collar. If someone finds your animal and brings it into the vet for scanning, your contact information will come up so we can reunite you with your pet. If you move, you don’t need to buy a new ID tag. You just update your information in the database.
When to Microchip Your Pet
You may wonder when is the appropriate age for dog microchipping or cat microchipping. In actuality, it is not the age of your pet that matters as much as its size.
In our experience, you can typically microchip kittens and puppies after they are at least 4 weeks old. But the criteria we use is that the animal shouldn’t be microchipped until it weighs more than one pound.
